Partially dismembered remains found…Has the Long Island Killer struck again?

On Tuesday, July 8, a couple on Long Island made a gruesome discovery in some tall grass near a municipal parking lot as they were walking towards the ferry: the partially dismembered remains of a female. The area is located in Bay Shore, NY, near Maple and Main Streets, less than 30 miles away from the area in Gilgo State Park, where eight sets of remains were discovered between 2010 and 2011. Has the Long Island Serial Killer (also known as the Gilgo Beach Killer) struck again? Authorities aren’t releasing much information yet, only to say that the female has not yet been identified and they have released cadaver dogs into the area, as well as Gilgo Beach, apparently in an attempt to make sure other bodies have not been dumped in that area as well. Between 2010 and 2011, investigators discovered a total of ten individuals along Gilgo Beach, Oak Beach, and Jones Beach State Park. They announced in November of 2011 that one individual was responsible for all ten murders. Only five of the victims have been identified. Police believe the majority of the victims were strangled and dismembered.

Many FBI profilers and serial killer experts suspect the killer may be someone who is familiar with the Long Island area or a seasonal vacationer. Since the five identified victims all went missing during the summer months, it is possible the killer visits the the area each year around the same time. He might even have his own vacation home. Many believe the locations of the disposal sites indicate his familiarity with the area. It is possible the killer grew up in the Long Island area and returns each summer.

However, the killer has been dormant since the last identified victim went missing in 2010. Many people in the area have lived in fear, wondering if he would strike again. The proximity of the location where the newest body was found, along with the murder taking place in the summer months, as well as the reports that the body was partially dismembered seem to tell a familiar tale.

Here’s something else to think about: In June, the body of a twenty-one-year-old medical technician was discovered in a wooded area in Medford, NY, about 16 miles from Bay Shore (in the opposite direction from Gilgo Beach). Search parties were looking for the missing mother after she was reported missing and her car was discovered abandoned about a mile away from her home. Police have released very little information pertaining to this particular investigation–only that they have identified the victim as the missing woman, Sarah Goode, and it is an active investigation. However, there are reports stating her friends have contacted the police about a male acquaintance she was having problems with. Sources say that police collected blood evidence from inside the car and they believe a violent struggle took place before her death. I think it is less likely that Sarah Goode’s death is related to the Long Island Serial Killer, but due to the fact that she was found in a wooded area in the same county as the other bodies, I don’t think anything can be ruled out at this point. Perhaps that is why police haven’t released many details to the press about this particular case.

Needless to say, I’ll be watching these cases closely and will post any updates as they are made available. If you have any information about either of these cases, I urge you to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

UPDATE: The dismembered woman has been identified as Chinelle Latoya Thompson Browne of Brooklyn, NY, and a woman who lived in her apartment building, Leah Cuevas, has been charged with her murder. Witnesses claim the two fought loudly on July 4 over a rent dispute and police have located Browne’s blood inside  Cuevas’ apartment. In addition, a nineteen-year-old named Dante Taylor has been arrested and charged with the rape and murder of Sarah Goode. It appears, for now, that both are isolated incidents, and not related to the Long Island Serial Killer.

      • No, the remains found this week were of a woman. The LISK is responsible for the murder of an infant, however. One of the female remains found in the original search included a woman and her toddler.

    • I honestly think that SG was killed in her car, and it was someone she knew, it was personal. The Long Island Killer I think only vacations there in the summer. He does not live there but is familiar with the area. He is in his late 20’s early 30’s and he could be a loner but he also I think he is outgoing.

  1. Excellent thoughts and I agree. So many good questions like his is a vacationer? If it is the LISK, why lay dormant for two years unless there’s more bodies not found yet?

    Great blog. 🙂

  2. I think that 21 year old Sarah Goode was a victim of the LISK. What troubles me is that I cannot find any mention of her autopsy and why has the media not continued probing the police for details?

    • I honestly don’t think SG was killed by the LISK. I think her case is entirely different, so it is being handle different by the police. They may suspect someone already and are keeping a low profile and watching him…

  3. I think Dormer has done everything he could to get people to believe SG died of exposure bc I also believe that this case can’t be solved without “digging up some skeletons” right there in the Suffolk County LE. I think they have the answers but can’t risk solving it without either revealing major mistakes or even involvement. This reeks of a cover up

  4. I personally think SG was the LISK’s victim. I think they should release the 911 tape, its interesting to me that she was so easily dismissed as just a drugged out girl, that was a long way to travel, being on the phone and seeing so many people I would think she was in so much more fear than just drugged. Dormer just wants this one closed. Amber is another interesting one as she didn’t take her cell phone with her why? She normally did and her roommate at the time did say she must have known this person well I agree with that.

    • Shannan is the reason police started searching the area in the first place. Police still say she wasn’t one of his victims.

    • I think the Suffolk County police are holding everything back. I have a homicide investigator friend, worked that county for 8 yrs been in LE for 32 yrs and he would kill me for saying this but it bugs me so bad. He said for a fact that they can never allow this to be solved or “heads would roll.”
I’ve known him for a long time, I have family on Long Island and he’s a straight shooter..I believe him.

    • RJ you aren’t aware of Shannan? You have a lot of reading to do, my friend bc I know you are meticulous about your research. ..I can’t wait to hear your opinion after you do. ( :

      • I googled her after re-reading what JJ wrote in Serial Killers Abridged. I agree, I’d love to hear that 911 tape. I do remember watching this on 48 hours. Shannon being missing was how they discovered all those remains while searching for her. Why the tape hasn’t been released is beyond me. I do believe that the LISK is a policeman. He used Craigslist to lure many of his victims and this case will be included in our upcoming book this September titled, Social Media Monsters: Internet Killers which myself and JJ are co-writing and half complete.

  5. JJ whats your opinion on Dormer and the whole powers that be trying so hard to convince the family, media & public that Shannan died of exposure when theres no more evidence to support that than there is to say she was murdered? We have no idea what cause of death was, so being that LE is SUPPOSED to go by evidence why not say…we dont know…instead of all the effort put into trying to make ppl believe she wasnt murdered? BC they dont want to say…”theres more to this than what we can say and if she was murdered we screwed up badly. So lets go
    with whats behind door #2?”

    • Kristy, I have often wondered how the police can say for certain that Shannan is not one of the LISK victims. Just because there are witnesses from that night when she went missing? Even if she did get into the marshes herself and died from exposure, she was running away from SOMEONE and I don’t understand how they can claim that someone wasn’t the LISK. Especially when all the other identified victims were escorts who also used Craigslist. Something is up, and with this new body earlier this week and a severed arm that was found yesterday at another scene, I think police really need to get their story straight.
